Spotlight On: Tom Savini

Friday, October 7, 2011
Tom Savini is an actor who has appeared in several cool films like Dawn of the Dead, From Dusk Til Dawn, and Planet Terror. He also directed the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. What he is most remembered for, however, is his work doing make-up and effects for horror films. I think I read somewhere that he is retired now from make-up work, but here are some films that he has worked on.

Dawn of the Dead
This is definitely one of the coolest projects that he has worked on. While the whole blue face zombie make-up isn't that scary today, this movie does have some amazing gore effects. You have people's heads exploding and blood all over the place. This movie is just really cool, and a majority of that reason is because of Tom Savini.

Maniac
Overall I thought that this movie was just okay, but it does have some really cool effects by Savini. I think that the severed head that you see above looks amazing. Here is a video of Savini talking about working on the film, including the scalping scene.

Friday the 13th
Probably the coolest thing that he does in this movie was create the look of young Jason. Young Jason definitely gets the biggest scare in the whole movie.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
While I think his work on the old man is really creepy and cool, I think his greatest make-up work in this movie is turning Bill Moseley into Chop Top. He is just disgusting to look at...

Trauma
He does a lot of really neat beheading scenes in this movie including ones for Brad Dourif (which you can see above) and Piper Laurie. I couldn't find a good clip from this movie, but you should just go see it.

Here are some clips of Savini in movies he has been in...
