My Review: Sucker Punch

God dammit! After months and months of waiting for this movie to come out, and thinking that it was going to be as awesome as Snyder's previous films, and way over-hyping it up in my mind (and on this blog.) this movie turned out to be a disappointment. The plot was rediculous, the visuals, while amazing at times, were a bit too much, and there was virtually no dialogue. Or good dialogue, I should say. Okay, so the movie is about a young girl named Babydoll who is placed in a mental institution by her stepfather. Her stepfather sets up for her to be lobotomized, but during the procedure we are suddenly taken to a brothel. What?!?!?  This made me so confused. Is it because she got lobotomized that we are suddenly in a whore house? After a while I just ignored this because I didn't really want to think about it anymore. Okay, so at this whorehouse, they make the girls dance and they are going to have Babydoll dance for this High Roller who is going to pay to take her virginity. When Babydoll dances however, she is transported to different worlds where she has to fight samurai, zombie Nazis, dragons, and robots. In her alternate reality (which I guess is an alternative reality inside of an alternative reality?), she is helped by an old guy who tells her that in order to escape she needs a map, fire, a knife, and a key. Four other girls called Sweetpea, Rocket, Blondie, and Amber help her try to find these items, in both the brothel and the fantasy world. I don't understand why Mr. Snyder felt the need to have an alternative reality inside of an alternative reality. Why couldn't they just escape from the mental institution? Or why didn't they just take the whole mental institution part out of it? It really wasn't necessary to the story at all. I also wish that Snyder didn't overuse the slo-mo effects. Yes, it looked cool in 300, it looked cool in Watchmen, but jeez, in this movie it was way overdone. This was most evident in the part where they are fighting the robots. It was nothing but slow motion!!! The one thing that I really with this movie had though, is humor and some character development. There was not a single comedic moment in this film, and all of the characters are one-dimensional. I'm not saying that every action movie needs to have comic relief, but when a movie is as dead as this one, it would be nice. Basically this movie was pretty girls crying, pretty girls in over-stylized fight sequences, then pretty girls crying, then fight sequences, over and over until the blaaaah ending. I was extremely disappointed in this movie. And to make matters worse, the movie projector or whatever stopped for like 2 minutes at the theater I was at in the middle of a scene. So, not only was a watching this not-that-great movie, but I was in a bad mood because I was in a shitty theater. Lose-Lose.... My rating: 3/10 (and that is being generous)

Even More Sucker Punch Posters/ New Trailer

With only a month left to go until Sucker Punch hits theaters, the people at Warner Brothers released five more character posters for the film. These ones have a sort of vintage-y look to them, and are definitely targeting males...

Personally, I'm not a big fan of these posters because I don't really understand why they would make vintage type posters for a very special effects driven movie. I think that the images of the girls really clash with the backgrounds. Anyways, a third trailer has also been released. Instead of giving more of the plot, they just show more of the effects in the movie. Interestingly enough, there is no dialogue at all in the trailer. While I am kind of disappointed that they are just showing us more of the same stuff that was in the other two trailers, I still think that its pretty neat and has a really cool song.

So, yeah...I'm really excited for Sucker Punch....

Okay....so every year there is always one movie that I get really really excited for. Last year it was Alice in Wonderland. I was beyond excited for that movie. Everytime a new picture came on the internet I freaked out, and when the trailer finally came out it was like Christmas. The problem with this is that I hype up these movies so much in my mind, that they tend to disappoint when I actually see them in theaters. This was the case with Alice in Wonderland. While the 3D looked really cool, and the visuals were amazing, I wasn't really impressed with the overall movie. I thought that Johnny Depp would be perfect as the Mad Hatter, but he wasn't as great as I thought he would be. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the movie. My little sisters have it on DVD, and I watch it with them from time to time and enjoy it, too. I thought that Mia Wasikowska was a great choice for Alice and I loved the Cheshire Cat and the March Hare. I think it was because I had been hyping up the movie in my mind for over a year (since the moment I first read about it being made) that made it a disappointment for me.

I'm really hoping that is not going to be the case for Sucker Punch. From the moment I read about Zack Snyder making an all female action movie, I was hooked. I have loved all of Zack Snyder's past movies, and I'm a sucker for some kick ass film heroines. I was at first kind of irked with the change in casting because I thought that it would be great with Amanda Seyfried, Emma Stone, and Evan Rachel Wood. And even though I still think that Emma Stone would have been a much better choice than Jena Malone, I think that Malone, Emily Browning, and Jamie Chung are going to be great alongside Abbie Cornish and Vanessa Hudgens. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I was amazed! It had to be one of the coolest trailers I had ever seen, and was only surpassed by the second trailer that gave a bit more of the plot. I mean damn! These chicks are fighting samurai, dragons, robots, and demon-looking army guys. How much cooler can it get?!? The visuals in this movie just look fantastic, and I'm definitely going to shell out some money to see this in IMAX if possible. I don't even know where the hell I can do that around here, but I'm going to try to find out! Interestingly enough, this movie isn't going to be in 3D like every other action movie, but from the looks of the trailer, it doesn't need to be in 3D for all of the special effects to look really impressive. It comes out two months from yesterday, and I am super excited!!! Mr. Snyder hasn't disappointed me with a movie yet, and I'm hoping Sucker Punch won't be any different! I even got super excited when I saw this little cut-out ad at the movie theater yesterday....

My Most Anticipated Movies for 2011

Today is the first day of December, which means that the end of 2010 is approaching. There are lots of really cool-looking movies coming out in 2011, and here are the ones that I am the most excited for....

JANUARY:

The Green Hornet comes out on January 14th. I had a hard time picturing Seth Rogan as a superhero, but after seeing the trailer this movie actually looks pretty good. Plus, Christoph Waltz is the villian, and we know from Inglourious Basterds that he makes an excellent bad guy...

I adore Guillermo del Toro movies, and while he did not direct this, he wrote the screenplay, so it should be amazing. Plus, both times I watched the trailer, it scared the hell out of me and actually made me scream. The first time I saw it was on Youtube, but the second time was in the theater and I actually covered my eyes like a five year old because I knew what was coming....and I still screamed...



FEBRUARY:
Interestingly, there are no movies coming out in February that I really want to see...

MARCH:

This movie actually looks really good. I thought that it was just going to be another British romance movie like Pride and Prejudice, but there are parts in the trailer that look sort of creepy. Plus, I think that Michael Fassbender (from 300 and Inglourious Basterds) is quite handsome...

Red Riding Hood definitely gets my vote for the coolest looking poster of all the 2011 movies. I was actually excited for this movie since I first read that it was being made. I'm a sucker for werewolf movies (though nothing will ever beat An American Werewolf in London), and I've always liked the Little Red Riding Hood story. Plus, this movie has a great cast with Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Julie Christie, and Virginia Madsen. I'll forgive the "director of Twilight" thing at the top of the poster because I've like Catherine Hardwicke's other movies.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! Anyone who has ever seen my blog before should know that I am extremely excited for this movie. I am totally gonna shell out $20 or how ever much it costs to go see this movie in IMAX! If I was only allowed to see one movie for the entire year of 2011, I would definitely choose to see Sucker Punch!!! March 25th, 2011: I've had that date written in my planner for months! APRIL:

Rainn Wilson as a superhero? YES PLEASE! I thought that this movie was going to be straight up comedy, but I've seen clips of this movie, and its kind of like Kiss Ass. By that I mean that it combines comedy with ultraviolence. I thought that this movie sounded cool when I was first reading about it because it has people I really love like Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Michael Rooker, and Nathan Fillion (yes!), but after seeing this clip, my mouth literally dropped open after he hit the guy in the face. I was quite shocked....this movie looks AWESOME!

What a great cast! Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, AND Zooey Deschanel. To be honest, this movie looks kind of rediculous, but I'm totally going to go see it anyway. From the trailer it looks pretty funny, and I'll pretty much see anything with James Franco in it.... WARNING: This is the red band trailer...

At first I thought that making a 4th Scream movie was a really dumb idea because Scream 3 was kind of shitty, but now I'm pretty excited for this movie. The ghostface mask has been parodied so many times, and has been worn by every single kid on Halloween, so I'm curious if it can still be scary.

MAY:

This is the first of the Marvel Studios movies coming out in 2011 that lead up to The Avengers movie coming out in 2012. I'm not really sure what to think of this movie after seeing the trailer, but I still plan on seeing it because I like Natalie Portman and I think that Chris Hemsworth will make a good Thor.

In my opinion, the Pirates of the Carribean movies kept getting worse and worse, but perhaps this one will be better... Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner won't be in this one, but are being replaced by Ian McShane as Blackbeard (excellent choice), and Penelope Cruz as Blackbeard's daughter Angelica. I was really suprised when I heard that Penelope Cruz was going to be in this movie, but I bet she'll make a good swashbuckler...

I really liked The Hangover, so I'm super excited about its sequel that comes out on May 26th. Apparently in this movie the four guys are heading to Thailand for Stu's wedding. I also read that there will be a cameo by Liam Neeson, which should be interesting....

JUNE:

X-Men: First Class comes out on June 3rd, and I haven't seen any pictures from it yet, nor do I believe that there is a trailer. This movie is about Professor X (played by James McAvoy) and Magneto (played by Michael Fassbender) in their younger years. I think that the casting for the two main characters is perfect, and I am really excited to see the trailer for this movie whenever it comes out....

Here's the second of the 2011 Marvel Studios movies. I don't really know all that much about The Green Lantern, but after watching the trailer I have to say that this movie looks pretty cool!




JULY:

Captain America is the third and final Marvel Studios film to come out before the big Avengers movie that comes out in 2012. Some people don't like the idea that Chris Evans is both The Human Torch and Captain America, but I was not a big fan of the Fantastic Four movies, so I think that he'll be better as Captain America.

OMG!!! This movie is going to be fucking fantastic!!! Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford as cowboys that have to fight aliens that land on Earth??? I don't know who the fuck thought of that but I'm really glad that they did....I just love it because at first it seems like some normal western and then all of a sudden this giant ass spaceship comes out of nowhere...BRILLIANT!




There you have it...now you can see where my money will be going in 2011....

New Sucker Punch Trailer!!!

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG! I thought that the first trailer was badass, but this looks spectacular!!! Why can't it be March right now??? I was pumped for this movie, but now I am waaaay beyond that! There are no words for how excited I am about this movie. Mr. Zack Snyder, why must your movies be so amazing all the time? And now he's directing the next Superman movie! I wasn't too fond of the last one, but I thought that Brandon Routh was a great Superman, so they should keep him. Anyways, the new trailer for Sucker Punch looks awesome, so everyone should watch it because this movie is going to be fucking amazing!
