Horror-A-Day: Day Thirty One

I thought that the original movie was aweful because of how violent the rape scene were and because I don't think that the punishments she gives her attackers were violent enough. With this movie it gets a little more even. The rape scenes in my opinion were not as bad as the original. When I watched the original it freaked me out because of how helpless she was, and while she was helpless in this film it didn't have the same effect for me. Also, I don't think that a woman would act like she did in real life. If someone broke into my house I would be screaming at them to get the fuck out, not just standing there all quiet. Also, I don't think that the lead actress was that great in this film, with being with victim or the revenge-getter.This movie actually made me gag. It always grosses me out when I see people get things shoved in their mouths so I gagged both times she did that, with the rat and the guys penis. EEEEWWWWW!!!!

What a waste of handsome! In this movie, Michael Fassbender plays a Nazi vampire, but you only see his actual face when they have the scene in the '30s. For the rest of the movie he has this crazy make-up on. The other vampire people looked normal, so why couldn't he? Well, I suppose the wouldn't have been scary if he was a handsome vampire. Oh well, we still have Henry Cavill to look at. The one thing that I really loved about this movie was that after they killed Fassy's character, the teenage vampire girl suddenly aged really quickly and then died. Her curse was broken, but then her age caught up with her.

This wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be, but I still kind of liked it. The best thing about it was probably seeing Bill Paxton as a vampire. I loved him as Severen. I also love that there are three people from the movie Aliens in this film.

This movie was fantastic! I cannot believe that I have lived 21 years and have never seen Return of the Living Dead! It is strange that it has zombies that can talk, but this isn't a super serious movie, so it really works. The best part was definitely with the Tarman! When that girl finds him in the basement and he is all "BRAINS!!!!" it was fantastic. Love this movie!!! Plus the part with the woman who they tied to the table was really cool when she was explaining why zombies eat brains.

This movie was an interesting take on the classic Little Red Riding Hood Story. It is about a pretty young girl named Rosaleen who is warned about men who are "hairy on the inside" from her grandmother. The special effects are rediculous in this film, but that is what makes it so great. When Stephen Rea's character turns into a wolf it just looks strange, but I love it.

The best part, though was probably the part at the ending when the werewolf who killed her grandmother transforms and we see the wolf's nose coming out if his mouth. Unfortuanately I can't find a video of that on Youtube...

I spent all of last night and some of this morning writing a paper on this movie, so I am just sick of it already even though I have only seen it once. I was writing a paper on supernatural depictions of Native Americans in film and I started writing it about Wolfen, then about Wolfen and this movie, but I realized that I had a lot more to say on this film. I love the original Ginger Snaps, and this is a sort of prequel to it. It is about the ancestors or Ginger and Brigitte in the 19th century, who are also named Ginger and Brigitte. It is a werewolf origin story and explains how werewolves came to Canada from the white settlers. It features handsome Native actor Nathaniel Archand as a guy called Hunter who helps the girls out. To me, this movie moved really slowly and didn't get good until the ending. I loved the part where Ginger lets all of the werewolves into the Trading Post...that was realyl cool.

If you took the movie Zombieland, replaced the zombies with vampires, then took out all of the humor, you would get Stake Land. This movie is about two people, an older man and a teenage boy who are trying to survive in a world full of vampires. Although I think that the vampires look pretty freaky, I was getting really bored while watching this movie. Also, they give the vampires animals sounds. They sound like lions when they attack and like squealing pigs when they get hurt. I just thought that it was strange. This movies is just filled with very one-dimensional characters who aren't very likable, so by the end of this movie I really didn't care what happened to any of them.

I like Kevin Smith movies. I loved Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma so I was really curious about whether or not his horror film would be good. Here is my biggest issue with this movie: it is really not a horror film. At all. It starts out with a horror-esque plot. Three horny boys hoping to have sex end up getting held hostage by some crazy religious group. The horror in this horror movie really ends there. This movie is more a commentary on religious fanatics and also on the government. There really are no good guys in this movie because both sides are bad. You have the religious people who plan to kill these three boys, and then you have the government people who plan to kill all of them, including the children. You really don't want to take sides with either of them. Anyways, people are getting shot in this movie left and right at really unexpected moments. I really didn't care for this story at all, but I thought that it had good performances by Michael Parks and John Goodman.

I thought that this was going to be a straight-up werewolf movie, but it really wasn't. This movie is about a cop who is tracking down a killer who is slashing his victims to ribbons. All clues lead to a wolf, but an expert on wolves claim that the wounds were not done by an animal. In the beginning, you are led to believe that these Native people can transform into wolves and are doing the murders, but in the end you find out that it is Wolfen doing the killings. Wolfen are not really werewolves, but juse a supernatural type of wolf that coexisted with Native Americans 20,000 years ago. This movie doesn't really have a lot of horror elements until the ending, and uses way to much of the POV of the wolves, especially since the look of it is really dated. What is awesome is that this movie fits with this paper I am writing about Native Americans in Supernatural films. I had no idea that there were Native characters when I rented it, so it just worked out perfectly!

I loved this movie! I didn't expect it to be nearly as good as Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead, but it really was! It has some pretty terrible acting, but it makes up for that with a good story and some GREAT gore effects. It is about scientists who are trying to find a cure for the zombie problem. They are doing so at a military base, so they have to deal with these asshole army guys. I love the whole Frankenstein-esque aspect to the story. The head scientist (who they appropriately call Dr. Frankenstein) is learning that zombies can be taught things, with his main subject being a zombie called Bub. Bub reminded me a lot of Frankenstein's monster, and the scenes where the doctor is teaching him things reminds me a lot of the scene from Bride of Frankenstein with the creature and the blind hermit. The doctor even has the zombie saying a few words in this movie! This movie also has some great gore! There are quite a few scenes of people getting torn apart by zombies. I also love all of the parts where you see the zombies after they have been operated on. Like the severed head that can still movie its mouth, or the zombie that has no head, and is just a body with a brain. Love it! I also love the different zombies you see when the huge crowd gets into the military base. You see a clown zombie, a bride zombie, and a ballerina zombie. Awesome!

Horror-A-Day: Day Twenty One/ My Review: Paranormal Activity 3

I thought for sure that this movie was going to end in the big house fire that Katie talked about in the first film! That was a pretty big plot point in that movie. She talked about how her house burned down when she was a kid and she lost everything, I thought that since this was a prequel to that, that it would get incorporated into this film. But...I was wrong. Anyways, this movie is about Katie and her younger sister Kristi when they were kids. Kristi has this imaginary friend named Toby. As soon as an imaginary friend was mentioned, I knew that it was going to be the demon. I'm sure that everyone figured that out right away. Anyways, this movie had its freaky moments. The first thing that made me jump was when their mom popped out of the closet wearing the mask. That startled me a bit... I thought that they camera on top of the fan was pretty cool. The panning motion is really effective in horror movies. When it pans and we see someone under a sheet in the livingroom, and then it pans to the babysitter in the kitchen, and then it pans to see noone in the livingroom, and then pans back to see the person under the sheet standing behind the babysitter. I thought that that was really cool. A better example would be in the movie The Orphanage when the main woman is playing the knock on the wall game. That is my favorite scene in that movie. Anyways, back to this movie. So, there are three cameras set up in the house, one in the mom's room, one in the girls' room, and one in the kitchen that pans to also see the living room. Nothing ever really happens in the mom's room, so all of the action is in the kitchen and the girls' room, since Toby lives in this little room that they have in their bedroom. So, all this crazy stuff happens, including a game of Bloody Mary that ends in Katie and her mom's boyfriend's friend getting freaked out. I was kind of disappointed that they didn't use the Bloody Mary game from the movie trailer. WTF!?! Anyways, so the mom doesn't believe any of it until she goes in the kitchen and all of the tables and chairs fall from the ceiling. Then, they go to the girls' grandma's house, and that is where even more crazy stuff happens. I was really disappointed in this ending. I was starting to think that this movie was actually pretty interesting, and then they had to ruin it with a shitty ending. So...the grandma is a witch? A witch that controls this demon named Toby? For starters, what kind of name is Toby for a demon? Secondly, why the hell did they have to bring witches into it? Third, why was Katie suddenly a demon at the end? She was a demon for like two seconds and then changed back. Fourth, how do the girls not remember any of this? I would certainly remember if a goddamn ghost/demon/whatever suddenly picked me up by my hair! This was a movie that had the potential to be good, but was ruined by a dumb ending. My rating 6/10

So far it seemed like I watched the good Argento movies last year, and the shitty ones this year. Now I have finally watched one that I kind of liked. It is about a young girl played by Jennifer Connelly (in her first starring role) who has the ability to telepathically communicate with insects. This comes in handy when other girls near her boarding school, including her roommate, get murdered. She works with this bug scientist to try to find their bodies using a certain type of fly. This movie got off to a good start and kind of dragged for a while in the middle, but the ending was nuts! It turns out that the killer is this deformed little boy named Patua! The part where he was going after Jennifer while she was in the boat was freaking me out! Patua is freaky looking!

Horror-A-Day: Day Nineteen

I actually found this movie pretty interesting. It is about a man named Jamie (played by Jim Sturgess) who is depressed and really self conscious about his face. This is because he has a large heart shaped birthmark that covers a good portion of his face as well as his arm. He starts to notice this gang of people with demon faces (although they look more like lizards to me). After they kill his mom, he meets a man called Papa B, who I am assuming is supposed to be the devil. Papa B says that he will get rid of his birthmark in exchange for him spreading a little chaos. Jamie agrees, thinking that he will only have to do graffiti. So, Papa B sets Jamie on fire and the next morning he wakes up and peels his burned skin off, revealing a markless face. So, with his new face he finally gets enough confidence to talk to this pretty model/ delivery girl that he had been crushing on. He eventually finds out that it is not graffiti that Papa B wants. Instead, he wants Jamie to cut the heart out of someone and place it on the steps of a church by midnight. It is extremely hard for him, but he does it, and by the next day he seems to get over it just fine. I won't spoil the ending of the movie, but I'll say that I'm kind of iffy about it. I normally HATE this kind of ending because I think that it is taking the easy way out, but for this movie I think that it sort of works.

Horror-A-Day: Day Eighteen

Hammer horror films always have such pretty girls and a great use of color. This movie definitely has both. Yvonne Monlaur is very lovely as the assistant schoolmistress who is trying to get to her new job. After her stagecoach and driver run off she ends up staying at an older lady's house where she finds the son chained to the wall in his room. So, she sets him free, but we soon find out why he was chained up. The son is a vampire who throughout the movie makes several other vampires while being hunted by Abraham Van Helsing. This is the third movie that I have seen with Peter Cushing in this role. I don't know what it is about Hammer vampires, but they always look strange to me. I used to think it was because they were in Technicolor, but now I think that it is because their fangs are so thick!

Horror-A-Day: Day Seventeen/ My Review: The Thing

Monday, October 17, 2011 0 comments
John Carpenter's The Thing is actually a perfect movie to make a prequel for. It starts off with all of this stuff that had already happened, and that is what this movie is about. If you've seen the original (which you should!) then you know how this movie is going to end, with a man on a helicopter shooting at a dog that is actually an alien. I don't know why they have to call this movie The Thing too. If it was a remake I would understand, but it is a prequel so they could have at least come up with something lame like The Thing Begins or Before The Thing or something like that.
I just thought that this movie was okay to semi-good. There are some good parts, and the part at the end when Kate is trying to get that can and the alien pops out scared the hell out of me! I do appreciate how they explain certain things, like the burned alien they find in the original movie with the stretched out face. Except it isn't a stretched out face, it is two faces stuck together and stretched out. Also, they are very sneaky with who has been turned. The only time I ever guessed who it was was before the other girl turned. Anyways, there were parts where I was actually falling asleep too. And I never do that in the theatres. Also, it used too much god damn CGI!!! I know I sound like a broken record complaining about CGI in every horror film I review, but jeez!!!! The practical effects were the best thing about the original The Thing!!! That is what made it so great and so freaky. I don't care how creepy and slimy they make the alien look in this movie, it is still god damn CGI and we can clearly see that it is god damn CGI! Anyways, I thought that I knew who was going to be the guy at the end who would shoot at the dog, but I was wrong...My rating: 7/10

I loved this movie! If you're looking for a movie with tons of werewolf action, this is not the movie to watch, but it has a great story. My one complaint is that it has waaaay to much backstory. It starts off with a begger who goes to this rich man's house. After the begger insults him, he puts the begger in the dungeon. Once in the dungeon, the only people he sees are the jailer and his daughter. Eventually the daughter grows up to be a beautiful (but mute) woman who gets thrown in the dungeon herself after she rejects the rich man's advances. While in there she gets raped by the begger, then kills the rich man, and escapes. She gets found by a man and his wife and gives birth to a baby boy and dies in labor. That boy grows up to be the werewolf character in the story. See what I mean? Way too much backstory. Anyways, the boy's name is Leon and is played by Oliver Reed (who was a handsome devil when he was young). We first see him turn into a werewolf while out at a pub with his friend. A girl takes him up to her place and he turns into a lycanthrope and kills her, then goes downstairs and kills his friend. Oliver Reed looks really cool in his werewolf makeup.

That picture doesn't really do it justice. You would have to watch the movie to see how cool it looks. Anyways, this is a great example of a Hammer horror film. I think that this is my favorite, along with The Curse of Frankenstein.

I actually kind of liked this movie. I think that it had an interesting story. It is about a college girl who needs a ride home to Delaware, so she gets a ride with another student who advertised on the ride board. The two of them end up getting in an accident and stuck in this backroad. She eventually finds out that the guy she is with is not from Delaware, but is a guy who has a huge crush on her. So, the two of them are stuck in this car together while it is freezing cold, and they start seeing ghosts around them. They are the ghosts of several other people who have died where they are. This movie definitely wasn't scary, but it did keep my interest the whole time.

This movie was actually supposed to be a part of my Horror-A-Day last year, but it was unavailable from Netflix because a bunch of other people wanted to see it too. I actually really loved this movie. I thought that is was fun and creepy and was just a great Halloween movie. I watched this movie on Friday, and then I went and bought it on Saturday. That is how much I liked it. It is a combination of stories. There is a high school principal who poisons a kid's Halloween candy and then puts him in a hole in the backyard, a group of kids who awaken some zombie children, a pack of werewolf girls, and an old man who is attacked by a little pumpkin-headed boy who wears a sack over his head. What made this movie even cooler was that there wasn't a whole lot of CGI. The werewolf transformation scene used CGI, but the actual werewolves were puppets, which was awesome! I also love the look of Sam with his mask off!

Woah this movie! There are some crazy things happening in this film. You have babies getting thrown from bridges, a woman getting a grinder in her mouth (which actually looked really cool), and what appeared to be a woman eating intestines out of another woman's asshole. Crazy crazy movie. Anyways, this movie stars Asia Argento as the daughter of a witch who was killed by the Mother of Tears. Asia finds that she has the power of invisibility and sets out to find the Mother of Tears while also evading authorities. The Mother of Tears is making the city of Rome go apeshit, and Asia is planning on killing her. Overall I didn't really care for this movie. I'm already not a big fan of witch movies, and this just wasn't anything special for me. Plus, the ending was totally anti-climactic. I mean, you have the Mother of Tears who is surrounded by all these crazy witches who are doing all of these crazy things, but Asia ends up killing her by ripping off her magic dress and throwing it in the fire. Lame...

Horror-A-Day: Day Twelve

I rented this movie only because it has Gale Harold, and before I started my Horror-A-Day all I was getting from Netflix was Queer as Folk seasons. He is sooooo goodlooking! Anyways, besides the times I got to look at his handsome face, this movie was pretty boring. It has the same plot as TONS of other horror movies, where a tramatic event happens and the husband and wife decide to movie away to some big spooky house. That was even the plot of American Horror Story, and I watched the pilot of that yesterday too, so I was kind of over it (Although I loved American Horror Story). So anyways, the wife finds out that there were tons of murders committed in this house, and then her husbands starts to change (Amityville Horror style). She also starts seeing ghosts, and is finding out that events in her life (including her pregnancy) are happening on the same date that they happened to the ghosts. She tries to leave, but for some reason her baby won't let her. At the end of the movie we don't know if her husband is actually changing, or if she is going crazy and imagining it. This movie wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't anything special.
